The members of Science college are deeply saddened by the death of Michael von Grünau the principal of the College from 2000 to 2009 and a fellow of the college for 17 years. He died of cancer December 22, 2011.

Michael was highly regarded by everyone at the college, so much a part of the college that it is hard to think of the college without him. He was always present at our Monday coffee hour presentations where professors, students and alumni alike would gather to discuss research and topics of interest. He always brought out the best in all the members of the college.

Lillian Jackson, the administrative ssistant to the principal of Science College was closely associated with Michael throughout his 17 years with the college. She wrote that “He motivated and encouraged the students; he was gentle and unassuming, energetic, approachable and fair, and everyone loved him. He even invited his students and those who worked with him at Science College to his home for the annual party by the pool. This is why so many of his graduates, both at the college and in the psychology department, remained friends of his and kept in touch with him years after they left for their own careers."

We are deeply grateful for all that he has done for all of us.

Founded in 1979, Concordia University's Science College gives students the opportunity to participate in laboratory research activities each year from the first year on and a curriculum emphasizing intensive student-faculty and student-student interaction. Students often perform their research activities in other countries throughout the world and often publish their results in scholarly journals. The Science College accepts as members applicants who show high motivation and potential for excellence. Its academic programme complements student's regular university undergraduate programme.

The following principles underlie the philosophy of the education offered by the College:

  1. Science is a system of thought and not a collection of facts.
  2. Science does not exist in a void, but forms part of the human tradition.
  3. Science education is traditionally compartmentalized into departments, but science itself crosses those borders.

Science College promotes and encourages a non-competitive atmosphere that complements its success.

The Science College has its own space centrally located among all the science departments in the new state-of-art RJ Renaud Science Complex, located on Concordia University's Loyola campus, 7141 Sherbrooke St. West, SP-363. Students have 24-hour access to a place where they can study, write, and interact with other students and faculty members.
